Notes from the Yarnie:We had lots of requests for sock yarn, but we hadn't seen a lot of sock yarn in Italy. On our third buying trip, we asked all of our producers about sock yarn, and all of them said the same thing: "If you want sock yarn, there's only one guy in Italy that you want to talk to." We drove to a small city far from the yarn district early one morning, and met the man behind self-patterning sock yarn, as in... he invented the machine that prints it. We walked through his test production, saw samples, asked and answered questions, and played with his Boxer dog. Instead of interviewing him, like we do with most producers, we figured out that he was interviewing us to see if we were folks he wanted to bother working with. He sells mostly in Europe, did he want to bother with the US? We told him we wanted his yarn; he told us he was willing to work with us.
Then we were invited into the factory to see the real production. Imagine: carts of thousands of skeins of sock yarn, every skein identical in color quality, smiling workers running the machines he invented at full capacity, and a Boxer with full run of the facility (just like Emily at Yarns of Italy). We asked about knots. He told us sometimes there is a knot. A knot in each skein? No. Maybe a knot out of ten skeins. We shook hands and ordered our first shipment. This sock yarn master has an unusual production schedule, so you will see new colors pop up throughout the year.
This is basic sock yarn, 75% superwash wool, 25% nylon. All of the colors are self-patterning, either with long color repeats to self stripe or with other patterns. The denim colorway is more self-patterning, while the other shades currently in inventory are self-striping. Each ball is 3.5 oz/100g and contains 460 yards, enough for a basic pair of adult socks.
We have to buy a pretty decent amount at one time, so all of the skeins of a color are in a single dye lot. Their quality control is amazing, so you can expect to be able to combine skeins to produce large garments and not have issues with color.
